Kwale - Kwale police officers in Diani tourists’ town within Msambweni sub-county have recovered one of the fire arms that have been used by notorious criminals in the area to terrorise locals.
Msambweni OCPD Joseph Omijah said that they managed to recover a G3 rifle registration no:77094448 with 11 unused rounds of ammunition from two suspected criminals on Sunday night.
Omijah said that his officers had laid an ambush in most of the escape routes used by criminals after terrorizing locals at Ibiza and corner Musa in Diani before the two suspects arrived on a motorcycle.
“The two were flagged down by my officers who they had not noticed them around 9:45 in the evening and instead of stopping they jumped over leaving the motorcycle and a bag which contained the fire arm,” he said.
Speaking in his officer yesterday Omijah said that the two ran away as police traced them in vein adding that they are being searched.
“They were lucky but may be we would be talking of two people dead just because my officer realized later that the bag left behind was containing a fire arm but if it was realized immediately during the chasing battle with the suspects, they would be dead,” he added.
He said the suspects were heading to Diani town from Gombato area possibly to terrorize business people as they were used to before police devised a way of capturing them.
Omijah said that the firearm has been used to commit 90 per cent of criminal incidents in the Diani tourist’s town adding that it was a big achievement for the police in their bid to curb insecurity in the area.
He said that the dangerous firearm according to records is a government item that was stolen from an AP officer in Emali Town before it was sneaked in Kwale County by the suspected criminals.
Omijah said that records shows that there are other two weapons among them an AK-47 and a Seska pistol that are being used by criminals in the area.
“We urge the public to help us to get the rest from criminal hands so that the area can be safer because without locals support it cannot be possible,” he added.
Kwale District Criminal Investigation Officer Edwin Kamau said that the firearm is the one that was used to kill a Swiss national Tomas Venzim at Diani campsite restaurant on 25 October 2013 and an M-pesa agent at Corner beach in Diani the same period among other robbery with violence incidents.
“This weapon has disturbed us a lot and its recovery is major achievement we can celebrate,”said Kamau.
Police also indicated that the weapon has been in the hands of a terror suspect Ali Delawa who was gunned by police in Malindi recently after he was accused of being involved in killing a police reservist Ahmed Abdallah Bakshueni.
Other suspected criminals on the loose said to have been using the weapon are notorious Rama Mwachala who police said was a close associate of Delawa before his death.
OCPD Omijah said that they will continue soldering on to ensure all suspects are arrested and weapons recovered in the area.
“We just want local to help us with information because these people are their relatives and are dangerous to the society and development,” he appealed.
