Fire razes down over 30 houses in Mathare

Mathare - Scores of families were left homeless and property of an unknown value destroyed after a fierce fire razed down their houses in Mathare 4B's Mashimoni area Monday afternoon.
The fire, which began at around 2.30 pm, is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault in one of the houses.
It is estimated that over 30 shanty houses were gutted down by the fire which spread rapidly as most occupants were away and thus unable to salvage anything.
The Nairobi County fire brigade arrived later and managed to put off the fire though the damage had already been done. They blamed their late response to inaccessibility to the area due to congestion.
An eyewitness said that a kid who was retrieved from the burning houses sustained scars while another man suffocated from the smoke and was rushed to the hospital.
Tuesday morning, the affected people were seen scavenging through the rubble as they counted losses.
