Fire leaves over 50 people homeless

11 July 2013, 14:12 James Kabotia

Property worth thousands of shillings was destroyed Wednesday night after fierce fire razed eight wooden houses at Kaitheri village in Kirinyaga central constituency.

The fire, according to the police, started from one house after a lamp exploded and spread to the neighboring houses.

Over 50 people were left homeless with residents trying to fight it with bare hands.

However, nobody was injured in the 8.00 pm incident since resident managed to escape.

Briefing the press, Kirinyaga central OCPD Kamau Njuguna said that the fire engulfed the eight rental houses and efforts to put it off were not successful.

He said that nothing was salvaged and the residents was forced to watch from a distance as the fire consumed their hard-earned properties.

“It was not possible to save anything but fortunately nobody was injured,” He said.

Fire engine from Kirinyaga County council also failed to respond to distress call; it’s yet to be established why they failed to respond.

The victims lamented that they are being forced to sleep in the cold since all their personal properties were destroyed and urged well wishers to come to their aid.

They also lamented that their effort to put off the fire was thwarted by lack of water as the area is experiencing acute shortage of the water.

Red Cross officials however visited the residents Thursday morning and distributed some food stuffs but said it was not enough for the affected families.

The affected families are camping at nearby church with many saying that they fear their young ones may get sick due to the cold weather in the area.

They urged well wishers to provide them with blankets, clothes and mattresses saying that the situation is dire.

"We hope we can get mattresses, blankets and clothes as the situation right now are bad as many people are sleeping in cold,” they appealed.
