Fire leaves 32 families homeless
25 April 2013, 12:24
Over 35 families from Majengo slums in Nyeri town were left homeless following a fire incident that occurred on Wednesday morning.
The fire that reduced the 32 timber houses into ashes started at around 6:30 Am.
Confirming the incident, area police boss Kirunya Limbitu said the cause of the fire could not be immediately established but investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
He said the fire began from a kiosk and then spread quickly to the nearby structures.
It is suspected the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
There were no serious casualties recorded. Kenya Red Cross staff at the scene attended to those who sustained minor injuries.
Residents blamed the local fire department for their slow response saying the blaze could not have caused such damage if they responded on time.
Despite the public efforts to put it off, nothing was rescued from the structures. Some of them were used as residential homes while others served as business premises.
