Nakuru - A fierce fire gutted part of the Hyrax Pre-historic Site and Museum Friday morning.
It took the intervention of the Nakuru County fire brigade to put out the fire that threatened to spread to the entire site and neighbouring areas.
According to the Public Relations Officer at the Kenya National Museums run site, Zakayo Akwaro, the source of the firecould not be established immediately but investigations had been launched to establish its cause.
He said that the fire that lasted for about half an hour started near the site’s upper gate giving suggestions that a smoker near the road could have unknowingly started the fire.

Akwaro added that the inferno destroyed several physical structures within the site’s park in addition to destroying the natural environment vegetation cover.
“We suspect that someone could have been smoking near the edge of the park before the fire started and spread. We called the fire brigade team and it responded very fast to put the fire out,’’ said Akwaro adding that such incidences are normal during dry seasons.
