Fear, agony as ‘evil spirits’ torch houses in Busia

11 March 2015, 16:18 Philomenah Chebet

Busia - Fear has gripped several homesteads in different constituencies in Busia County following a bizarre fire that razed grass thatched houses, which locals have blame on ‘evil spirits’.

Over 20 houses have been razed in fire incidents since last Sunday in various parts of the County, with the loses suffered by residents estimated to amount over KES 1 million.

On Sunday night, seven houses were mysteriously reduced to ashes at Ang’orom village in Teso South Constituency. Two more houses caught fire on Monday afternoon in the same area in full glare of the area MP Mary Emase and OCPD Paul Odede, who had gone to condole with the families whose houses had been consumed by flames.

The MP and police boss together with members of the public watched helplessly as the ferocious fire reduced the homes to ashes.

According to Opim Sikuku, a resident of Agate Village that is a few metres from Ang’orom Village, two more houses were gutted down in the village Tuesday morning.

Eight houses have also been reported to have been consumed by flames at Ebulwani village in Budalang’i constituency in unclear circumstances.

Meanwhile, a farmer at Ikondokhera village in Nambale sub-County is counting losses after three of his cows were burnt to death in a fire incident.

The farmer's neighbour is said to have lit dry leaves in his farm to prepare it for ploughing when the fire spread to his neighbour’s compound. The fire was luckily put out before it could cause any damages.
