'Fasting' Muslim beats wife who caught him feasting

08 July 2015, 12:11 Godfrey Olukya

Kampala - A  Muslim who was caught red-handed eating food in a restaurant by his wife was so embarrassed that he beat her up.

He accused her of following him around and shaming him in public.

Yusuf Zaake, a resident of Mafubira, a suburb of Uganda's eastern town of Jinja shocked people who were in the restaurant where he was having lunch when he slapped and kicked his wife who had found him eating yet she knew that he was on Ramadan fast.

According to the owner of the restaurant, Aisha Kakete, it was hard for her to know if Zaake was a Muslim as he did not have the Islam hat when he ordered the food.

''He ordered rice, Irish potatoes and chicken. He had just started eating when a woman, whom we later learnt is his wife walked in and a fight ensued,'' said Kakete.

She added that prior to the fight, the woman accused Zaake of not leaving enough funds for food claiming that he was fasting yet they have young children who are exempt from fast.

After the people around separated the fighting couple, Zaake attempted to explain why he was eating yet he had told his wife that he was fasting.

''I was at work when I fell sick and decided to come and have lunch. I have not committed any offence,'' said Zaake.

But the wife said that he had been informed by a friend that he gets expensive lunch everyday yet leaves little money for the family.

She added that the friend called her on phone when Zaake entered the restaurant and that is why she rushed there to shame him.
