Farmers in Imenti North district are switching to organic manure which they say is increasing their yields tremendously.
The farmers say relying on fertilizer alone could not assure them of better returns as compared to organic manure.
Speaking to the media, Newton Mureti a trainer with the Meru based Methodist Bio-Intensive Agri-training center which is promoting use of the organic manures said farmers were adapting to organic based inputs after experimenting and realizing the benefits.
Mureti said organic manure was cost effective as compared to fertilizer thereby reducing the farmer’s overheads and increasing returns.
He said that they were encouraging use of organic products saying that they were environmental friendly and was not a health hazard.
The trainer said they were also encouraging farmers to use efficiency micro-organism instead of the conventional pesticides saying that were easier to use and also cheap.
