Family buries wrong body, forced to exhume

05 February 2015, 08:22

Busia - A mix-up at Busia County Hospital Mortuary left two families in the region in double grief, after it emerged that a body that was buried by one of the families was not that of their relative.

Residents of of Bukalama village in Matayos Sub-County buried the body of a woman on Saturday, believing it was that of 32-year-old Judith Akinyi, only for another family to show up on Tuesday morning claiming that the buried body was that of their kin.

Akinyi’s body was collected from the mortuary last week Friday and according to family members and neighbors it had an identification tag with her name.

"We picked the body which was handed to us by the attendants at the facility and ferried it home believing it was that of our in-law, we were shocked to be informed that we had buried a wrong body," John Omonya told journalists.

It later emerged that Akinyi’s body was mistakenly swapped by mortuary attendants at the facility with that of 21-year-old Elizabeth Omenda.

Hundreds of residents flocked to the homestead of the late Akinyi in large numbers to witness the body being exhumed by police officers.

Curious locals started trickling in to the home as early as 11am after word filtered that police officers were coming to retrieve the wrongly buried body.
The officers arrived three and a half hours later in two vehicles, with one of the cars carrying the Akinyi’s body.

The process took less than an hour and the police took away the body to Bumala town, where it will be reburied.
