Fake currency racket busted in Webuye

Webuye - Police in Webuye are holding three people who were found in possession of fake US and Kenyan currency in the town.
The three suspects were nabbed with a total of US $11 000 and KES 300 000 at a guest house in the town. One of the suspects is a foreigner from a nearby country while the rest are Kenyan citizens.
Webuye East Police OCPD, Willy Simba confirmed the incident and thanked members of the public for the tip off that led to the arrest of the trio.
“After a search at the room they were booked in, we found the money in 100 US dollar bills and the Kenyan shillings were in 1 000 denominations,” said the police boss, who added that a manhunt has been launched for their accomplice who escaped during the ambush.
“We are grateful to the residents of Webuye who have continuously given us information that has led to arrest of suspected criminals. We are encouraging more members of the public to volunteer information to us on persons they suspect to be involved in criminal activities,” said Simba.
The incident comes barely a week after a middle-aged man was arrested in the same town for possessing a forged police identification card.
The 31-year-old man was arrested after an operator of a photocopy bureau in the town alerted security agents, as the suspect tried to scan the fake identification card.
The police imposter was sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison, when he appeared before the Webuye Resident Magistrate Chrispunus Owuor.
A month ago, another man in the same town of Webuye was arrested for posing as a Kenya Defence Force (KDF) serviceman. Police who were tipped off by a member of the public recovered full KDF military regalia from the hotel room the suspect was putting up.
He was released on a bond of KES 100 000 and a surety of the same amount, when he appeared in the local court.
