Nyeri - Three thugs posing as auditors from Equity Bank headquarters in Nairobi have robbed Othaya Equity bank branch more than KES 30 million.
The robbers arrived at the bank at 6.50am Friday morning and started carrying out a snap audit just before other members of staff had arrived, police said.
Central region police coordinator, Larry Kyeng’ has said the robbers had posed as auditors and were seeking to know the amount of money available in the bank and in the Automatic Money Transfer (ATM) safe boxes.
Kyeng’ said the alleged thugs were armed with crude weapons which he did not name.

“They stuffed the money in three sacks and escaped through the back door which is normally used by the staff. They used an NZE Saloon car registration number KBM 132G,” he said.
“The staff in the bank did not know they were robbers until they threatened them the last minute. Nothing was destroyed since the safe box was opened automatically in the presence of three staff members,” Kyeng added.
He said the suspected robbers came early in the morning when only a few employees were in the bank including the operation manager, cash office manager and cleaners.
Nobody was injured in the incident.
The police coordinator however said investigations have been launched since the CCTV cameras recorded everything.
No arrest or recovery has been made so far.
