Nakuru - Men of cloth in Nakuru have said poor parenting is the main reason behind the high cases rape and abuse among minors in the country.
The pastors said that it was high time that parents took full responsibility of instilling discipline among their children.
Speaking on Sunday in Nakuru town during a children rights forum, Pastor George Nyachiro said ignorance by members of the public on child rights is the biggest contributor of child abuse and negligence.
“Cases of rape and abuse among the minors is rampant in the country because of ignorance by the parents,” he said.
Nyachiro said a huge percentage of the public has no knowledge on child rights and freedoms hence becoming perpetrators of child abuse, saying the trend ought to change if the rights of children are to be safeguarded.

He also pointed that the church has not done enough to advocate for and sensitise the public on child rights and freedoms.
“We need to get things the right way,” he said.
He added that the church has failed in intervening on cases of child abuse, something he said has led many to suffer physically and mentally.
He called for concerted effort to protect children rights and freedoms.
