Envoy: US embassy will not be closed

07 July 2014, 11:27 Joseph Njung’eh

Nairobi - The United States has no intentions of closing its Nairobi Embassy, Ambassador Robert Godec has said.

Godec explained that the travel advisories issued by his country summarize the security situation in Kenya in order to allow American citizens make informed decisions when traveling.

“We do not tell Americans to avoid Kenya. Informing citizens and protecting them is the first obligation of all governments,” he said in a statement.

Recently, there have been questions regarding US-Kenya partnership but the envoy stated that the two countries have an excellent relationship.

He clarified that his country does not support any political party or politician, but supports ideals and principles set out in the constitutions of the two countries.

“The United States has excellent relations with the government and people of Kenya. We do not support any political party or any particular politician in Kenya.  We support the ideals and the principles set out in your Constitution and ours,” he said while urging Kenyans to ignore rumors and focus on facts.

Godec said that Kenya, just like the US, has challenges such as job creation, building of infrastructure, deepening democracy through devolution and strengthening security.

He called upon leaders to come together noting that it is time to shun violence and find the way forward.

“I urge Kenyans to unite to address the many challenges facing the country, and to embrace political tolerance and an open discussion of issues,” he asserted.

While stressing on the relationship between the two countries, Godec claimed that Americans contribute KES 85 billion in development assistance to Kenya.
