Nakuru - Rift Valley Council of Elders have lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta proposal to set up a fund for National Heroes and Heroines who fought for Kenya during colonial era.
The elders said that it was high time that heroes were accorded the respect they deserved from the government and the public as well.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday by the council spokesperson, Gilbert Kabage, setting up of the fund will go a long way in enabling people who have made great contributions to the country live better lives.
“This is a very noble gesture from our president because it will help recognise people who have made great contribution in this country,” he said.
He observed that though the idea has come a bit late, setting of the fund should be a consultative process devoid of any political interference.
Kabage also urged parliament to come up with appropriate legislation on vetting of who would be beneficiaries of the fund and in charge of managing the fund.
“This initiative should not be mixed with politics because if this happens, it might not achieve its main cause which is to help great Kenyans,” he said.
