The elderly targeted for murder
02 July 2013, 12:30
The Mijikenda traditional organization, Kaya, has promised to help Kilifi County administration to identify and arrest those involved in killing of the elderly.
Speaking to the media in Kilifi, the Kaya spokesperson Joseph Karisa Mwarandu said that unreported killings of the elderly claiming that they are involved in witchcraft is tyrannical and that such behaviour cannot be condoned in the society.
Mwarandu said that the traditional organization will use traditional methods to identify the suspects and hand them over to the authority.
The Kaya spokesperson was responding to a case in which a 65-year-old man identified as a preacher was hacked to death by angry youths who claimed he was a witch doctor.
The Kaya traditional organization also plans to build a home for the elderly in Kilifi County which will also house those whose lives are in danger.
This comes just few days after the Kilifi County commissioner declared a fight against extra judicial execution of the elderly in the County.
Elderly people especially females with gray hair have had a hard time surviving in Kilifi County since last year after a group of youths pledged to kill all witchdoctors. The gray hair on their heads was and is being used to identify witch doctors in Kilifi County.
