Eighteen passengers cheat death in Kwale accident

27 March 2014, 09:23 John Kioko

Kwale - Eighteen passengers among them children, women and men escaped death narrowly on Wednesday when vehicles they were traveling in were involved in a road accident at Mwabungo area in Kwale County.

The accident occurred along Mombasa-LungaLunga Highway in Msambweni constituency.

Msambweni OCPD, Joseph Omijah confirmed the incident and said that the accident occurred  when one passenger vehicle lost control and hit anther one that was heading to LungaLunga from Likoni.

He said that one of the vehicles was trying to overtake when the accident occurred, terming it as a careless overtaking by the driver.

The 18 passengers, Omijah said, were rushed to Msambweni county referral hospital where they are undergoing treatment after sustaining injuries.

However, Omijah said that one of the passengers sustained serious injuries and is being treated at the same hospital.

“Most of those injured got head cuts, leg and hand injuries but there is no death so far," he told journalists in Msambweni.

The OCPD noted that police are currently doing their investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident although they have already singled out careless overtaking as one of the main causes.

He said they first rushed to scene save live of the passengers before embarking on investigations and subsequent arrest of those behind the accident.

“The vehicles are currently with us and we are hopeful owners will come for them. It is then that those involved can be arrested and charged if investigations show that they caused the accident,” he added.

Omijah urged drivers operating along the Likoni-LungaLunga highway to drive carefully to avoid risking lives of innocent passengers.
