Egerton lecturers go on Strike

22 January 2013, 13:04 Steve Wambugu

Operations at Egerton University in Nakuru remained paralyzed for the second day running after lecturers went on strike on Monday.

The lecturers have vowed not to resume work until the management of the school complies with a prior agreement of 33.1% basic salary increment and 14.28% house allowance that was agreed upon last year by the campus management.

In a press briefing at the main campus in Njoro on Monday, the chairman of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Robert Shivairo said that Egerton University was only paying them 17.% of basic salary and 7% of the house allowances.

Shivairo said they are now demanding the payment issue be revised to what was agreed last year.

The lecturers said that the Egerton University had received the money but was reluctant to implement the whole process as agreed, something they said they will be pushing the campus to honor in the coming days.

Shivairo urged the fellow lecturers not to be intimidated by anyone, saying what they are demanding for was rightfully theirs.

The chairman also observed that Egerton University was not being clear as to why they were not paying the full amount of money as agreed.
