Effects of lighting up

05 April 2012, 15:58Philip Kithome

When we speak about smoking what comes to mind is tobacco because this is the most smoked substance not only in Kenya but also around the world.

There are various reasons why tobacco is widely smoked which may include:

1.It is legalised by the law.
 2.It is cheap to obtain
 3.It is highly addictive.
4.Social misconception that it makes someone cool.
 5.Peer pressure

Although tobacco is legalized the government of Kenya through the ministry of health has put in efforts to discourage the smoking of cigarette by passing a by-law which made it illegal to carry out any form of marketing involving cigarettes. The government has also organised drives in terms of road shows, medical camps in an effort to educate the public on the effects of smoking.

Smoking has adverse health effects on the people who have the habit.

It harms nearly every organ in the body causing multiple diseases that leads to the deterioration of the smokers health in general. Some of the health problems include various cancers like: bladder cancer, Acute myelod leukemia, kidney cancer, stomach cancer.

Prolonged use of smoking may also cause fatal deaths.

To curb the number of deaths and diseases caused by smoking the government should set up rehabilitation centres for people involved with the habit instead of solely concentrating on hard drugs only, as it affects a huge proportion of the population.
