Nyeri - A trailer driver and his turn boy narrowly escaped death on Thursday following a road accident along Nyeri-King’ong’o road.
The 26-wheel-lorry was heading to Nyeri town when it plunged into river Chania, a few Kilometres from Nyeri town.
They were rescued by other road users and rushed to hospital for treatment of minor injuries they incurred.
According to eyewitnesses the lorry was among other three empty trailers which they said seemed to be competing, for they were moving at very high speed.
“We were behind the lorries all the way from King’ong’o town and they were being driven at very high speed despite the rain drizzling and the fog,” said some bodaboda operators at the scene of accident.
They said the driver lost control and veered off the road, since it was slippery and a meandering section of the road.
The accident caused a heavy traffic snarl up which lasted for about three hours with traffic police trying to control motorists and members of the public who jammed the scene.
Residents blamed careless driving and lack of road signs along the busy highway, as some of the reasons causing accidents mostly involving bodaboda operators.
