ODM campaign funds embezzled

Officials of a youth lobby group campaigning for Prime Minister Raila Odinga have reported an alleged misappropriation of funds meant for the ODM Mashinani campaigns in Meru County.
Orange Young Democrats League (OYDL) Meru Branch Chairman Lewis Kithinji and Secretary General Dickson Mwenda claimed that thousands of shillings had been embezzled since the campaigns started last week.
Speaking to the press in Meru Town, they called on the ODM Secretariat to hire auditors to scrutinize the group's account.
Kithinji lashed at ODM County Coordinator Edward Kimamancha accusing him of running a 'one man-show' in the local office and called for his immediate resignation.
“ We want engagements that will investigate into these serious claims so as to restore and promote the confidence and integrity of the county's ODM top leadership. We therefore condemn in the strongest terms possible the misappropriation of these funds,” said Kithinji.
However, Kimamancha denied the allegations saying that the funds allocated for the ODM Mashinani campaigns in the area were not enough.
“We were forced to dig into our pockets to have the campaigns run smoothly as the KES 50 000 allocated was not enough. Those spreading the allegations should dwell on the truth and stop pursuing malicious and parochial political agendas,” said Kimamancha.
He said officials of the OYDL spreading the claims were most likely aiming at curtailing the efforts made in drumming up of support for the Premiere in the region.
“Let us not make public outbursts that are likely to trash the gains that have already been made in the past weeks,” he said.
Mwenda urged the relevant authorities to conduct quick investigations into the embezzlement claims.
