Does Money Bring Happiness?
Two weeks ago, I told one of my co-worker that I was really happy because in six weeks I will finally achieve my ultimate goal of being financial independent.
I was expecting a supportive response such as congratulations, well done, or simply I am happy for you. Instead, he asked me a question ” Joe, are you truly happy just because you are debt free? I replied, “yeah, of course” and he asked me the same question again, ” Really? You are truly happy?”.
At first, I didn’t really think about what he was trying to ask me. I mean of course I am happy, I been in debt for almost all my life and being debt free is something that I thought it’s impossible for me. Then again, I guess what my co-worker is really trying to ask me is does having more income bring me happiness and the answer to that question is “No”, I don’t think money = happiness, but I do think money makes it a lot easier to achieve happiness.
I have heard the phrase “Time is money” many times and the people who use this phrase are probably people who spend majority of their time working. To be honest, I consider myself one of those people. To me, time is very precious because I am trading majority of my time working two jobs so I can pay off my debts faster. By paying off my debts and being free of money worries, I can quit my second job and have more time to achieve my happiness to do the things that makes me happy like spending more time with family, friends and traveling, knowing that I don’t have to go into debt in order to do the things that makes me happy. The more money that I have, the more time I can spend to achieve my happiness.
For many people life can be very challenging when you have to constantly deal with money issues. If you don’t have enough income to sustain a normal life, it can lead to a lot of stress, but it doesn’t mean it will bring you happiness. Happiness is something that you have to achieve yourself and there’s an old saying “Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure make it a lot easier”. Everyone’s has their own money concerns rather its their mortgage, tuition, credit card, utilities bills, or car payment loan. If you don’t have enough income coming in, it will lead to a great deal of stress. When a person is stress about their financial situation, they are usually depressed, frustrated, or unhappy because they are so stress about their financial situation. Having financial stability can get rid of all the life’s problems that relates to money, it allow the person more time to do the thing they like, things that makes them happy. It’s very difficult for a person to find happiness when there’s so much negativity surround them and money can certainly help.
I still believe that money can’t buy happiness, but it does makes it a lot easier to achieve it when all your money concerns is solved . To me Happiness has to do with the experiences, interactions, and the moments that you have with your friends, family, and soul mates because those moments you will cherish for a long time while purchasing a materialistic objects will only bring temporary happiness. I won’t lie, money is part of life, it allow you to afford the necessities in life, but money can’t buy good friends, it can’t buy family, and certainly it can’t buy love. Money is only a stepping stone toward happiness.
