Do opposites really attract in relationships?
15 December 2014, 16:53
Nairobi - Normally when you raise questions about differences in a relationship you normally get an answer like love conquers all, or opposites attract-just about anything that will come up to the mind.
True, opposites do attract but when it comes to relationships it may not bother you in the beginning up until time goes by and you start to realize the glaring differences. If the other person does not have a religion, their mind can be changed but when it comes to two different beliefs then the class is inevitable especially if the parents are die hard believers.
Where though do opposites rarely attract?
If you two have children, then what religion would you want them to be brought up in? Because at the end of the day, each person believes theirs has the best teachings. The child will obviously not have a say in what they would like, and if you bring in the parents then they will create even a larger issue. At the end of the day, one is going to have to be overlooked and the other chosen.
The wedding and every other day
We are not going to isolate the wedding on its own because it is a one day event and thus an easy sacrifice albeit tricky. Look at it this way, some churches do not allow divorce and one form of christening the ceremony, in the event of a divorce the protocol would be different depending on how the marriage was formalized so one has to do their research and find out what each of their religion states.
Not only that, there is the happily ever after, some churches have their sermons on Saturdays, others Sunday. Some religions have a different day, like the Muslim on Fridays. So will each spouse have to have their own day of as usual or will one have to let go of their belief so that they can attend sermons and what not as a family.
Changing your religion
There is no religion that is against gaining new flock, but some are very strict on how one should go about it. It is not easy for a Muslim or Buddhist to leave their religion because it is like breaking up with your family and rarely do you find people who are willing to make the sacrifice because at the end of the road they end up back there.
Being initiated into a new religion is different however, might look easy enough when your spouse is practicing it but when you do it, that is when you see the huge differences.
It is not just about clothes, what you can or cannot eat or do. But religion after a few months can make you realize that you cannot change yourself for someone or have them change themselves for you because it may end up creating a rift in your relationship that will eventually lead up to your break up. The family may not stand with you depending on the decision you will make as it may look like a betrayal of what you have all grown up in.
