Dandora: Garbage that is also a saviour
13 February 2012, 13:08
As many walk far from it, others walk directly into it.
This is the garbage piles in Dandora phase one just by the roadside.
Many residents in Dandora dispose their garbage here because they cannot afford two hundred shillings per month to give to the
The garbage is collected from the estates once per week and disposed off at the dumping site, which is in Dandora Phase Two.
Due to the insufficient funds from the residents, they dispose it off there because it costs them nothing.
The City Council's efforts of collecting the garbage from Dandora have always been in vain. The residents keeps on disposing it there.
As people passby, they are so keen as they walk for not to step in that smelling dirt.Ironically others walk directly into it as they search for their daily bread.
You will see a mother with her children picking left overs from the garbage just to get something to put in mouth and call it a day.
According to this lady whose name has been withheld, she rather come here with her children and look for leftovers and eat on the spot than sleep on hungry stomachs.
“Mimi huja hapa kila siku jioni kutafuta chakula. Wakati mwingine napata ya kutosha na nakula na hawa watoto wangu.Wakati mwingine sipati chakula cha kutosha na nawapa watoto wakule pekee yao. (I come hear daily to search for food.Sometimes I get enough for my children and I whereas sometimes I get little and leaves it to my children to eat.) says the lady. As we call them leftovers, to some it is their food.
Street children are also seen by the garbage piles collecting plastics, metals to take to scrapes and get a penny to purchase for their sniffing glue. If an extra penny is earned, that is when they think of buying something to eat.
A man confesses to me that he comes to the site daily to collect milk packets and this helps him get something for himself and his family. He says the more packets he collects, the more money he earns. According to him,he doesn’t care for the smell and the dirt. All he wants is to get money for his family.
As much as the garbage is a nuisance to people with businesses in Dandora, it is also of great importance to some people who earn a living from it.
