Nyeri - Residents from Nyeri want the county government to set aside a cultural week. The residents said they would like a cultural week where they can showcase their talents both in music and in sports.
Led by artist Jegeman Githingithia and nominated county assembly member Zipporah Wangechi noted that Nyeri county is a home of artists and so there is need to showcase their talents.
“This can motivate the youth who are interested in art and music. They can participate in music, comedies and poems in such a week,” added Margaret Nyathogora who is a local women leader.
Nyathogora added that such a week can make money for the local hotels in the county.
A businesswoman from Kieni, Jecinta Wahome said that there is need for a cultural centre in Nyeri as a way of attracting tourists.
They were speaking during a one day women forum held at a Nyeri Hotel in Nyeri town yesterday. The forum was sponsored by Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW). The meeting took place between women MCA’s and CREAW (centre for Rights Education and Awareness) trained on County Accountability.
The chairman of Student Council Kimathi University Kevin Oganga noted that the county has many national musicians who can help promote local artists and who can attend such a week and market the county. Such musicians who hail from the county includes Jaguar, Nameless and Mejja Bro among many others.
They also suggested that a hero’s day for the county should be set aside since the county has many heros like freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, Environment icon Prof Wangari Maathai ancutld World marathon championship Catherine Ndereba among others.
The objective of the meeting was to provide a platform for the groups to engage on county issues so as to influence legislation and policies so that legislations developed from the county level resonates with people’s needs, interests and priorities.
CREAW sought to strength women leadership and accountability in Kenya and promote opportunities for women in development.
