Nyeri - A police officer had a difficult time before a Nyeri court trying to explain that the alleged police imposter, Joshua Karianjahi Waiganjo, was not indeed a police officer.
Police Constable Tarzan Ndindi in his evidence said that Waiganjo was not an officer.
Waiganjo is accused of presenting himself as a senior police officer and obtaining money from unsuspecting persons in the guise of securing them chance at the Administration Police.
Ndindi, who was the investigating officer in the case, however denied carrying out investigations to ascertain his claims, as Waiganjo’s lawyer Charles King’ori produced documents from the police department indicating that the accused was a police reservist.
The lawyer produced a copy of a letter dated May 29, 2003 signed by former Rift Valley PPO, Peter Kimanthi showing that Waiganjo had been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police Reservist in charge of the North Rift Region.
He also cited a copy of another letter dated November 23, 2012 from the then West Pokot OCPD, David Wambua recommending Waiganjo to be assigned duties by the former Rift Valley PPO, John M’mbinjiwe.
The Counsel further produced a copy of passenger manifest from the police air-wing confirming that Waiganjo was one of the 15 senior police officers who were airlifted from Wilson airport to oversee a security operation in Baragoi on November 30, 2013.
He also produced photos of the accused in full police gear in the company of other senior police officers.
The Investigating Officer disowned the documents which were presented before Chief Magistrate Wilbrodah Juma as exhibits, saying they were not solid proof that the accused was an officer since they were just copies.
He added that failure by the accused to identify himself as an officer of police at the time of arrest was indicative that he was not an officer.
