Court fines 70 people over illicit brew in Busia

Busia - At least 70 people were arraigned in a Busia Court on Monday for drinking or being in possession of illicit brew.
They appeared before Chief Magistrate Ogolla Ogembo where they were fined between KES 1, 000 and KES 10, 000 or three to five months in default.
Zablon Kadima and Christine Nabwire from Mulingiro in Samia were fined KES 10, 000 on their own plea for selling alcoholic drinks without a license.
Angela Okochieng and Rosemary Ouma from Nambale were fined KES 5, 000 following police crackdown at the weekend in Busia, Nambale and Samia Sub Counties.
Meanwhile, at least 20 people were arrested in a police crackdown on illicit brew yesterday in Malaba, Kamolo and Amoni areas.
Area police boss Lucas Ogara said police recovered 20 litres of Chang’aa and 300L of kangara.
"We will not relent on the push to curb the selling and drinking of illicit brew," he said.
He urged the youth to change their lifestyles and engage in productive activities instead of wasting a lot of time and money on drinking illegal brew.
