A 24 year old woman died while her husband aged 27 years is recuperating at Nyahururu District Hospital after they swallowed pesticide because her parents opposed their marriage.
The one year old couple who were casual laborers at a local flower farm, Esther Wangechi and James Wanyeki took 100 mililiters of a pesticide in Runda estate in Nyahururu town, according to Nyandarua North Deputy OCPD Benjamin Onsongo who confirmed the incident.
Onsongo said that Wangechi’s parents were opposed to their daughter’s marriage to Wanyeki, saying that he was not their favourite son-in- law.
Wanyeki had earlier on slipped a suicide note under his brother’s door saying that they have decided to commit suicide owing to what had befallen them.
The note read "We loved one another but our parents did not want us to live together.”
