Couple charged with neglect

17 May 2012, 12:47Anthony Muriuki

A couple was yesterday arraigned before a Meru court for allegedly failing to take their sick kids to hospital claiming it was against their religion.

The parents, Paul Kobia Mugwika and his wife Wambui Wangechi were charged that on 29th of March this year they failed to take their two children who were sick to hospital and instead locked them in the house before embarking on prayers and fasting for spiritual healing.

The offence was committed at Gakoromone area within Meru Township before the area senior Assistance Chief Stanely Jeremy Ngera rescued the two children aged between 10 and 6 who were in the house in critical condition.

According to the chief who received tip off from neighbors, said he had to break into the house of the couple to rescue the children before taking them to Meru Level Five Hospital where they were admitted.

The parents of the children who appeared before Chief Magistrate P N Mburu were later arrested and released on Ksh 10,000 bond.

The hearing of the case was adjourned to 13th June this year.
