Vihiga - Vihiga County has initiated plans to seek services of the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) to provide study loans to bright and needy students from the region.
County Chief Officer in charge of Education, Florence Khaguli said engaging Helb in managing funds to be set up for the programme aimed at ensuring that all needy children acquire education will help in accountability.
She said the County was working on proper legislation that will help set up the fund.
"The County has initiated some good plans to establish a County Higher Education Loans Board similar to the national government one," said Khaguli.
She added: "We will engage the services of Helb for effective management of the fund."

The Chief Officer said that they have taken the decision because Helb has the resources, manpower and structures that can help in running the programme effectively.
She added that the County will not be able to recover the money due to lack of structures to help with the process.
She noted that they decided to borrow from Helb to boost education of students from the county.
Khaguli said many students did not have fees and bursaries offered were not adequate, noting that Helb services were the best solution to the needs of such children.
