30 July 2014, 20:45 Mbungu Harrison

Mombasa - The county executive Joab Tumbo has said the government has the potential to make the domestic tourism a success citing concerns that insecurity in Mombasa and the entire coastal region as the major threat to the ever thriving sector.

The county government has also urged stakeholders in the tourism sector to join hands and promote the local tourism industry in the region.

“There is a big Domestic Market in Kenya,as a county we have the potential to get into the domestic market,” Said Joab Tumbo at a press conference in Mombasa.

As the tourism season peaks slowly, Tumbo said Mombasa is anticipating huge turn ups from both local and foreign tourists despite the insecurity hitch in the region.

Mombasa County is anticipating a huge growth in the local tourism especially during this year’s Cultural festival which kicks off in two weeks time.

He said the county has developed a marketing strategy to target as many foreign tourists as possible appealing for security departments to up their game and restore security within the coast.

His concerns comes two weeks after two Germany and Russian foreign tourists were gunned down in a mysterious incidents at Mombasa old Town, raising serious questions on how the government is handling criminal insecurity matters to foreigners.

“Series of attacks to foreign tourists within Mombasa town should come to an end, it’s a big blow to the sector if insecurity remains unaddressed ,” he added.
