County Commissioner wants Minaa mosque reopened

Mombasa - Mombasa County Commissioner, Nelson Marwa has asked the committee in charge of Minaa Mosque in Kisauni that was closed following a government directive to reopen it.
Three months after the closure of four mosques in Mombasa, Muslims were evacuated from Minaa mosque that has remained closed to date.
Marwa questioned why the Mosque committee did not resolve to reopen the mosque even after the government gave a directive for the same.
Marwa, who was addressing a public gathering at Miritini, asked the committees to fast-track consultations and reopen the mosque that has been closed for a period of three months.

“We ask the elders of the Minaa mosque in Kisauni to come together and open that mosque. We don’t know why they have not been able to open it,” Marwa questioned.
Minaa Mosque was among three other Mombasa mosques shut by the government following a police raid into the mosques to flush out radical youth, an exercise that led to the recovery of terror related weapons.
The administrator said the fate of the mosque now lies with the committees and community leaders.
Muslim faithful in Minaa mosque have been forced to seek alternative place of worship since the committee was not ready to take over the mosque activities.
Marwa said the government was ready to give full fledged security to Muslim faithful who will use the mosques for prayers warning that any religious leader caught giving radical teachings will face the full force of the law.
