Cord donates iron sheets to flood victims

06 September 2013, 11:33 Wilshere

Marigat, Nakuru - CORD coalition on Friday morning donated over 400 iron sheets to families that were displaced by floods at lake Baringo.

The iron sheets were transported to Sidaan Primary School in Marigat district where the distribution will be done through the supervision of a special committee.

While speaking in Nakuru, Ilchamus community spokesperson who oversaw the transportation exercise, Amos ole Mpaka, said that the donation will go to Sidaan, Ng’ambo and Oloropil Primary Schools which are the most affected.

“We want to start with the schools because they are the most affected structures in the area,” he said.

He accused the government of doing little to evacuate those living in Ng’ambo and Salabani areas, where basic infrastructure among them CDF and donor funded projects have been destroyed by water.

He said that despite Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku having visited the area a week ago to ascertain the situation, no help has been received from the government so far.

“Some of the infrastructure at Ng’ambo, Salabai and Kokwa dispensaries, all built through CDF and World Vision donor funding, have been destroyed by storm water,” he said.

He added that should the situation persist, a humanitarian crisis originating from poor sanitation and lack of food could crop up in the area.

Mpaka also noted that the government has an obligation to ensure the safety of all Kenyans.
