Naivasha - An operation to arrest some suspects along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road turned tragic after the officers involved in the chase hit another officer from the Flying Squad killing him on the spot.
Three other officers were seriously injured during the incident that involved a police car and a lorry, and were rushed to Naivasha district hospital in critical but stable condition.
Nakuru County Police Commander Bernard Koki and Naivasha sub-county commissioner Mohammed Abass visited the injured officers and ordered that they be transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment as investigations into the accident begin.
According to a witness, the accident occurred at around 10am Monday as the officers drove towards Naivasha town.
“The officers were chasing some suspects who had failed to stop after they were flagged down,” he said.
He explained that the car, which was being driven in a very high speed, rammed into the rear of the lorry killing the officer on the spot as the occupants of the lorry fled.
Speaking after visiting the hospital, Koki said that the officer who died sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
“The other three sustained cuts on the head while one of them has a fracture on the left arm,” said the senior officer.
He was quick to add that all the weapons that the officers were carrying have been recovered and are in good condition.
Koki noted that the stalled lorry had not placed any signs on the road adding that initial investigations showed that the driver of the lorry was to blame.
