Nakuru - An administration police officer attached to Dundori chiefs’ office in Nakuru north was arrested on Monday for extorting of money from a local businessman.
According to Milangine OCPD, Thomas Sangut the constable, Alex Kamau Ng’ang’a was arrested moments after he demanded KES 1 000 bribe from Paul Kimunge Mwangi, a businessman at Milangine trading centre, a few kilometres from his work station.
“He was arrested for demanding money from a businessman in the area which is against the police code of conduct,” said Sangut.
It is alleged that the AP, in a company of three other people, demanded the money from Mwangi who sells snacks (Kaa ngumu) after failing to produce a business permit.
The angry members of the public who were attracted by the commotion intervened and roughed up the officer forcing those who were in his company to flee.
They then called the police who arrested the officer.
The locals complained that the police officer has been harassing them ever since he was posted at the office of chief.
Sangut said that the officer will be arraigned in court.
