Commercial sex workers on the increase in Nakuru

07 August 2013, 16:04 Steve Wambugu

Nakuru town is once again acquiring a new status of notoriety due to the high number of commercial sex workers operating in the town day and night.

The town which has so far been baptised by the locals as the new 'sin city' in the country has seen the number of street women go high for the last three years.

According to one trader Philemon Kimani operating along the Gusii street, the street is among the most notorious streets in the town because of the high number of commercial sex workers it hosts.

“These women are always here from 7am in the morning and they don’t hide what they do from the public,” said Kimani.

Huge traffic jam of men

Kimani added that the street normally experiences a 'huge traffic jam of men' who visit the lane during the evenings and weekends for 'pleasure'.

Kimani who has been operating along the street for seven years said that some of the sex workers have even hired rooms in the lodgings along the street to conduct their business well.

“Some of these women have even hired some lodgings where they pay rent at the end of the month and that’s why you will always find men roaming along the streets day and night,” He said.

However, there is always a stiff competition among the sex workers along the street as the old guards try to protect their territory from the younger generation who are joining the illicit trade.

Following the merging competition among themselves, a cross section of young sex workers have resorted to camping along parking lotsso as to reach out to as many potential customers as possible.

Cold season a boost for illicit sex trade

Speaking with the media, one sex worker who sought anonymity said that business was booming for them during this cold season especially at night.

“Right now we are receiving more 'customers' at night because of the weather but there is high competition from the other women,” she said.

She revealed that they are currently charging between KES 500 and 800 per hour saying she receives 3 to 5 'customers' in a night.

The sex worker said that some of her esteemed customers are married men as they pay well compared to single men.
