Cofek threatens to sue NPSC over police recruitment

Nairobi - The Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) has written to the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) Chairman, Johnstone Kavuludi asking him to nullify the just concluded police recruitment exercise saying it was marred with fraud.
Cofek said it had received numerous complaints from the candidates who took part in the exercise and were disqualified on illegal grounds.
“In brief, the exercise was marred by severe and unacceptable irregularities particularly corruption, open bribery, lack of objectivity from recruiting officials, failure to keep to timelines forcing the exercise to be extended into the wee hours of the night, among other wrongs which cannot be sanitized in any way,” Cofek said in the letter.
The federation wants the individuals who led to the failure of the exercise be reprimanded and surcharged for the cost including being vetted afresh with a view to discontinuing them from the service.
“We have no sympathy for Kenyans who bribed police officers, out of desperation, and we expect that an urgent independent audit team comprising men and women from outside the National Police Service will piece together evidence and prosecute all those involved in the corruption,” Cofek said.
The federation threatened to move to court to block the exercise if the NPSC fails to revoke it within 7 days.
“If you will not have declared the recruitment exercise revoked, a nullity and a void that it is within 7 days with effect from today (Wednesday), we will have no option than to seek judicial intervention,” the federation said.
