Clerics condemn Westgate attack

24 September 2013, 17:34 Samuel Kisika

Nairobi - Local religious leaders under the umbrella of Kenya Church Leaders Forum (KCLF) have strongly condemned the Al-Shabaab attack on Westgate shopping complex terming it as an 'unfortunate, barbaric, and cowardly act of terrorism'.

Addressing the press on Monday at Westgate, Bishop Mark Kariuki, the KCLF Chairman, said it was humiliating that the terror act was carried out by a group that does not value humanity.

"It is indeed a great shame to consider that this act of terrorism was carried out by a group that does not value lives, and did not consider sparing the lives of even helpless women and children," said Bishop Kariuki.

"We take this opportunity to condemn this terror act and all the executors. We pledge our commitment to identify with the plight of the victims of this tragedy and plan to mobilise both material and financial support," he added.

Kariuki commended the President for his reassurance that he would pursue the executors. He also thanked the Kenya Defense Force (KDF) for the courage to 'confront the heavily armed terrorists' considering that they were putting their lives on the line to save the innocent citizens held hostage.

The KCLF further thanked individual groups including the Kenya Red Cross for moving promptly to aid in the evacuation of the wounded and deceased, and the public for overwhelmingly turning up to donate blood for the victims and their hearty financial contributions via mobile banking to assist the families of the victims.

In addition, KCLF chairman praised the political leaders - the former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, and his former Deputy, Musalia Mudavadi, for putting aside their political differences and joining the President in strongly condeming the terror attack.

"We note with gratitude the joint message communicated by the President, the former Prime Minister and his former Deputy in this terror attack. It is our prayer that they will continue to work together for the welfare of all Kenyans," said Kariuki.

"Coming together at this tragic time demonstrates political maturity which will definitely propel our nation in the right direction," he added.

Kariuki urged all Kenyans to support the government as they work towards weeding out dissidents who may be hiding among them to plans more attacks.
