Class 8 pupil commits suicide

08 February 2013, 17:11Mwangi Karanja

A class eight pupils has committed suicide at Cherangani in Trans Nzoia County after being accused of neglecting his duty of taking care of the family‘ s cattle.

The body was found on Friday morning dangling on a tree outside his hut.

The boy is alleged to have committed suicide after a quarrel with his father the day before for letting the animals feed on their neighbors’ crops.

Confirming the incident, Kitale OCPD James Mitugo said that the deceased was calm that day and after confrontation with his parent he walked out without telling anybody where he was going.

"That evening, he did not take supper as usual but his parents thought that the boy was angry with them," said Mitugo

It was until Friday morning when his mother was milking the cattle that she noticed her son’s body dangling on a tree nearby.

Mitugo said, "The boy had been warned by his father after letting the family cattle stray into a neighbor's farm but unfortunately, the boy decided to take what I can term as revenge by hanging himself.”

He added that the county has been experiencing increased cases of suicide among teenagers with the recent one being the case of a seventeen year old boy who hanged himself after failing the KCPE exams in the same constituency.

A family friend, Joseph Too, said that the boy who was a pupil at Osolongai primary school, was very charming and friendly.

He used to graze cattle every evening after classes.

“Am surprised that he took his own life because it is common for parents to give guidance to their children,” added Too.

The Kitale police boss urged community organizations to come out and offer counseling to youth in the County saying that cases of suicide and attempt suicide is at alarming rate.

“We can not continue seeing our children killing themselves and yet we have people in the society who have been trained to deal with such cases”, posed Mitugo.
