Church official shot dead in Mombasa

11 January 2015, 17:50 Mbungu Harrison

Mombasa - A church official was shot dead by an unknown gunman in Mombasa on Sunday.

Martin Mutuma, the secretary of Maximum Revival Centre, was killed as he entered the church gate for the morning church service.
The incident disrupted the church service as more police officers patrolled the area.

“He was coming to church when one man shot him from the back as he entered the church gate,” said one of the worshippers.

Police officers who were guarding the church quickly responded by firing shots at the gunman, but he managed to escape.

Confirming the incident Mombasa County Criminal Investigation boss Henry Odiek said they were treating the incident as a criminal act as they continue carrying out investigations.

Last year, the government resolved to offer security to places of worship in Mombasa after a string of terror attacks targeting churches in the region.

The church serves as a nursery school, a mosque is also in the same compound and the worshipers have coexisted peacefully in the last two years.

Mombasa leaders led by the Mombasa Church Forum chairman Anthony Njaramba asked worshippers to calm down as police carry out investigations into the incident.

The incident happened just a day after another person was stabbed to death by his colleague causing tension in the area.
