Nyeri - A somber mood engulfed a village in Othaya, Nyeri County, after a church elder went berserk and killed a farmhand in a family squabble.
Daniel Ndegwa Wachira, 45, allegedly used a panga to behead Patrick Wanjahi and seriously injured Peter Gathondu who were both working in his brother’s farm.
Wachira, who is a church elder at Umbui village in Othaya, however surrendered himself to police officers at Othaya police station after the incident to escape the wrath of irate neighbours.
John Ndegwa, a cousin to the suspect said that the three had been quarreling after the suspect’s brother asked the two farmhands to take over all farming activities and barred him.
“My cousin was not happy that his brother bought cows for their mother and also employed outsiders to take care of the farm,” Ndegwa explained.

He added that Wachira had invited the two farmhands to his house for a discussion over the farm before committing the offense.
Area OCPD, Joseph Mwika said that the suspect was in police custody and was going to be charged with murder and causing bodily harm.
“We are still conducting investigations but we understand that the dispute between the suspect and the victims was over the farm activities,” Mwika said.
He cautioned residents against taking law into their hands in case they have differences but instead follow the right channels of conflict resolution to avert similar incidences.
Police took the body to Mukurweini hospital mortuary while the other victim was taken to Othaya District Hospital for treatment.
