Narok - Police have arrested a chief who was found taking part in a Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) ritual in Narok.
The chief was among other residents who attended the ritual in which two of his daughters also underwent the cut.
Narok South Sub-County Commissioner Stephen Nyakundi said the chief will be arraigned in court once investigations are over.
The girls aged between 9 and 15 years are being treated at the Narok District hospital and Nyakundi warned that anyone found indulging in the acts will not be spared.
“Its sad that the chief who ought to be on the forefront in fighting the vice is the one violating the same. Investigations are going on ad the chief will appear in court soon," noted Nyakundi.
Organizations championing for girls’ rights in the county have accused some state officials’ of supporting FGM, a situation they say negates efforts to curb the vise.
Narok North children’s officer Julius Nguku on his part said it’s unfortunate that officers expected to enforce the law are the ones violating the same and maintained that his office will follow up the matter to its conclusion.
This comes barely a day after a girl bled to death as she was undergoing the cut in Kajiado County.
