Chief Kariuki gives colleagues training on social media

31 January 2014, 18:30 Joseph Njung’eh

Nyeri - More than 400 chiefs from Nyeri County met with Lanet Umoja Location Senior Chief, Francis Kariuki for training on how to use twitter and other social media platforms to curb crime in their areas of jurisdiction.

Chief Kariuki, who in the recent past has earned national and international recognition for his use of twitter in boosting security in his Location, said the technology is cost effective.

“It is the most cost effective way of communication and it is also very cheap. One is able to share information, improve security and development,” said Kariuki.

The 48-year-old chief noted that technology will help the administrators in mobilizing people for barazas and making public announcements with ease.

Kariuki said that since he began using twitter, he has gained more than 29 000 twitter followers, stating that the platform has helped him to reduce crime rate in his area by a huge percentage.

He observed that some of the chiefs who have already undergone the training are now using twitter to connect with their residents.

Kariuki has travelled to other areas of the country and also American and European countries mobilizing people to join the social platform.

One of the beneficiaries of the training, Kihatha assistant chief, Theresa Nyawira appreciated the development pledging that she will urge local residents to start tweeting her on any occurrence of crime in her sub-Location.

Nyawira said with the use of the technology, she will be able to improve communication and security in the sub-Location which was initially not easy.
