Central Kenya businessman to contest senior ODM position

Nyeri - A Central Kenya politician and businessman on Friday expressed his interests to contest the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Organizing Secretary position.
Gitonga Wathanga, who is the chairman of the party in Nyeri County is confident that he can revamp ODM considering his political diversity, place of origin and political affiliation.
Wathanga becomes the first politician from central region, an area perceived to be a TNA stronghold, to openly declare his candidature for a top position in ODM during the party’s elections in February.
In a press statement, Wathanga suggested that the party is in need of new blood if they are to win the 2017 elections.
He observed that ODM is dominant within Nairobi region and is heard only during functions organized by the Party leader Raila Odinga, saying that this is set to change if he clinches the position.
“My main focus as Organizing Secretary is to devolve the party to the branches by increasing their capacity and hence making the party to be felt at the grassroots,” part of the statement read.
Wathanga however rushed to dismiss claims that there the positions have been reserved for specific people, saying that nobody has approached him as a branch leader to support any particular candidate.
“There have been suggestions that there is a preferred line-up of officials by the Secretariat and the party leader but to the best of my knowledge, no such thing exists because as a branch, no one has approached us to support a particular candidate or candidates,” he said.
