Central Kenya MPs decry marginalization by government

20 May 2015, 07:42 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - MPs from Central Kenya region have complained that the national government is marginalizing the region in distribution of resources.

The group, consisting of MPs and Senators from Nairobi, Nakuru and entire Mount Kenya region said the region is perceived as wealthy while poverty levels are still high.

“Central Kenya region has over the years been referenced as one of the leading economic blocs that contribute to the national GDP. But it's seemingly becoming marginalised in the distribution of national resources by the national government,” said the group’s chairman, Denis Waweru who is also the Dagoretti North MP.

The over 70 MPs spoke after a two-day retreat at Aberdare Country Club in Mweiga, Kieni constituency.

The MPs resolved to form an economic bloc with a view of spurring socioeconomic development in the region.

Some of the leaders said that they will be encouraging their constituents to continue contributing to the population growth of the region with a view to increasing economic contribution in their respective communities.

They had met under the auspices of Central Kenya Parliamentary Group (CKPG).

The group’s patron who is the Meru Senator, Kiraitu Murungi, stated that observed that Kenyans from all regions suffer common problems.

“Some of the basic issues that we have committed to address within the region is the need to address the increasing poverty levels among the people of the community and the decreasing agricultural outputs,” Kiraitu noted.
