COTU calls for the prosecution of NHIF fund

03 July 2012, 13:40Oduor Omondi

The Central Organization of Trade Unions, COTU, has maintained its stand that it will remain firm and ensure that those behind the misappropriation of the NHIF funds are arraigned in court irrespective of their status in the society.

Speaking in Kisumu during the opening of the 97th COTU Executive Board Meeting, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli reiterated that the workers umbrella union will not sit back and look as huge sums of money collected from its members is misappropriated by a few individuals and let them go scott free.

He further said that NHIF as currently constituted requires radical restructuring, transformation and establishment of more health facilities in order for the fund to efficiently manage the huge sums of money expected from workers under the newly proposed scheme.

Atwoli further recapped that COTU will continue to speak out on any ills targeted at its members without fear or favor.

On the issue of the pending appointment of 15 new judges to the industrial court, he termed it a welcome move, but said that it was in the interest of trade unions and workers that the existing five judges be oriented on the principles and ideals upon which the court is build.

He said such orientation should be done by the current serving judges who have acquired experience in industrial dispute resolution and judgments as well as from developed economies where there are established industrial courts.
