CORD to support Monica Juma if President resubmits her

Bungoma - The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to resubmit the name of Monica Juma to Parliament as the secretary to Cabinet, saying they are now ready to lobby for approval from their members.
Addressing the press at Members Club in Bungoma town Sunday, CORD Co-Principal, Moses Wetang’ula said the excuses given by parliamentarians to reject Monica were flimsy and lacked weight.
“As a coalition, we were taken by surprise by the reckless sentiments by parliamentary vetting committee and the Members of Parliament by rejecting a qualified nominee because of personal vendetta,” said Wetang’ula.
Wetang’ula said as a coalition, they had agreed that if the President resubmits the name of Monica Juma after six months, they will lobby and whip their members to support her.
Wetang’ula said that Monica’s letter to the Speaker was justified because for a long period, many politicians had used the internal security ministry as a cash cow.
“Why reject a nominee because she was doing what is expected of her by the constitution. She represents the gender rule because she is a woman and is also very well educated,” asked Wetang’ula.

The Ford Kenya Party leader said Monica’s experience at the African Union committee on security and as an ambassador had shown that she was a lady with exemplary experience.
“For the first time as a coalition, we had thought that whereas we have always been disagreeing with the President's nominees on various posts, this was a nominee that the President had done right,” he said.
Wetang’ula noted that Parliament has been approving people who don’t deserve posts, yet they rejected Monica on flimsy issues.
“Parliament has in the past approved a nominee who went to Canada and was rejected by the Canadian government for lack of the requisite credentials, yet they reject a qualified person,” he said.
He noted that the coalition was not supporting Monica not because she is affiliated to their coalition, but because her track record was quite encouraging.
“This is not a matter of politics. If we were following politics we would not support her because her husband Peter Kagwanja is always abusing CORD leaders in the dailies,” said Wetang’ula.
Wetang’ula told Parliament that they will go down the history as the worst Parliament with lots of egocentrism if they reject Monica for the second time.
