CORD paybill number legitimate, Safaricom says

Nairobi - Safaricom says that the CORD coalition's teachers solidarity paybill number 672672 is legitimate.
There had been reports that the number was not valid and that it would be used to swindle Kenyans of their hard earned cash in the premise of supporting striking teachers.
But Safaricom has come out to tell Kenyans that the number is valid.
" The number is valid. It was used by a different customer until 2012 but was relinquished and is now available for use by a different entity," the firm said in a statement Thursday.
It is understood that the number in the past belonged to airline Virgin Atlantic.
The paybill number was launched by CORD leader Raila Odinga to help raise funds for languishing teachers who are suffering the effects of the ongoing strike.
Teachers have been told to go back to class by the Teachers Service Commision or miss out on payment for the month of September, word they have not heeded.
The teachers are protesting the government's failure to pay a 50/60% payrise which they have been handed by the Labour courts.
So far, it is understood that the coalition has raised KES 110,390 (As at 6.30 PM).
