Rukira said the officer, Kennedy Kinoti Kimathi, perished after the front tyre of his car bust, forcing it to veer off the road and then hitting the oncoming lorry head on.
He was on his way from Nanyuki while the lorry was travelling from Nairobi to Nanyuki.
The traffic police boss said two occupants who were in the lorry escaped unhurt.
The body of the officer was moved to Mathari Mission Hospital mortuary while the car wreck was towed to Nyeri Central police station.
