CCTV footage helps police gun down two robbers in Nairobi

05 February 2014, 12:23 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - Two robbers were shot dead by police in Nairobi's Central Business District in what law enforcers say is a victory for CCTV technology.

The two were part of a four man gang that was planning to attack and rob a jewelry shop Wednesday, along Kimathi Lane in the CBD.

Two of the four gangsters escaped but their colleagues were gunned down by police who had trailed them from the Hilton Hotel not far from the scene of the shooting.

In what was an apparent victory for technology and the use of CCTV cameras Central Police OCPD Patrick Oduma confirmed that the police had been helped in their search for the gangsters using CCTV footage.

" We have gunned down two robbers who were attempting to steal from jewelry shops and eyeing customers leaving banks, he said.

He confirmed that they recovered a pistol, handcuffs, fake identification documents and radio equipment from the gangsters and said that the police were continuing with their search for the escapees.

Oduma did confirm that the police had been aided by the use of CCTV to trail the gangsters.

" We had prior CCTV footage of the gangsters and it helped us identify and trail them. They are not new to such incidences and it is a relief that we have caught up with them, he added.

The OCPD also confirmed that the police are on high alert following an increase in violent robberies within the CBD, urging the public to avail any important information to the police.
