Nairobi - Major General Godefroid Niyombare who has led the ouster of Burundi president Pierre Nkurunziza is a former Ambassador of Burundi to Kenya.
The General announced Wednesday that the army had overthrown Nkurunziza's government on local radio and has announced the installation of a national salvation committee to help with transition.
He was ambassador to Kenya from 2014 and was replaced in 2015 by Nkurunziza.
Kenyan staff at the Nairobi Burundi Embassy describe him as a person who was jovial and did not lack something to say to anyone.
" He was like-able. He did not lack an opinion but was very friendly. We were surprised to see him leave so quickly," Stephan Bukirimane, a former media consultant at the embassy told News24.
According to reports, he also led an intelligence unit under the now former government but was dismissed after a falling out with Nkurunziza.
